LILY PADS ON CUBERANT LAKE 1 |
OUTLET TO CUBERANT LAKE 3 |
The Cuberant Lakes are most commonly reached by an approximately seven-mile round-trip hike from the Pass Lake Trailhead, located along the Mirror Lake Highway. Cuberant Lakes is a group of about seven lakes all located in close proximity to each other in a basin surrounded by mountains on three sides. The first lake you will come to is pretty lake that is covered on much of its surface with lily pads. About a quarter mile further down the trail you will arrive at the largest of the Cuberant Lakes. This is a very long lake nestled up against the base of the mountains. These two Cuberant Lakes are the only two with a trail leading to them. You will need to do a little cross-country hiking to reach the rest of them.
The first time I visited the Cuberant Lakes, I followed the trail to the first two lakes, then continued on from there in a counter-clockwise direction to see the rest of them, ending back at the first lake. The Cuberant Lake located furthest to the west was a bit tricky to get to, as there was some thick brush to work through, and it was down a steep slope. You may want to just skip this one if you don't have a lot of time. The rest were not hard to visit. The first time I hiked the Cuberant Lakes in July of 2007, the sky was filled with wildfire smoke, making it hard to get good pictures of the lakes, and giving me a pretty bad headache by the time I was finished. I returned again in September of 2011, coming on a day hike from Jewel Lake where I had camped. This was a really nice trip, as we also passed by Cutthroad and Kamas Lakes. We also threw in a detour to Lofty Lake along the way.
