ASPENS ALONG THE TRAIL |
MAYBIRD GULCH TRAIL |
Maybird Gulch is a nice six-mile round-trip hike to some beautiful seasonal ponds located in Little Cottonwood Canyon. The trail begins at the White Pine Trailhead. After following the trail for a mile, it will fork. You will stay to the right and cross White Pine Creek. After another mile, the trail will fork again, where you will turn right across the bridge. After crossing the bridge the trail will take you about a mile through a secluded forest, ending at two beautiful ponds. Well at least they are beautiful in the late spring and early summer. I last hiked Maybird Gulch in October and the ponds were completely dried up when I arrived. While the ponds were gone, the basin still provides some amazing views of the Pfiefer Horn.
If you are here earlier in the year, it is worthwhile following the inlet to the ponds up the steep slope behind them, as it will lead you to a very beautiful stream running through a green grassy meadow, with even better views of the Pfiefer Horn. While nearby Red Pine and White Pine Lakes receive a lot of visitors in the summer, Maybird Gulch is much more peaceful. I had it to myself the last time I visited.
